How much mulch do you need?
A cubic yard of mulch is 27 cubic feet. How far one yard stretches depends on how deep you spread it. For most garden beds, 2 to 4 inches is the working range: 2 inches to refresh a bed that already has mulch, 3 inches for new beds or a full renewal, and 4 inches only where weeds are stubborn.
| Spread depth | One yard covers about | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | 162 square feet | Refreshing a bed that already has mulch |
| 3 inches | 108 square feet | New beds and a full yearly renewal |
| 4 inches | 81 square feet | Weedy areas and bare ground |
How to measure your beds
- Multiply length by width, in feet, for each bed. For a curved bed, use the longest length and the average width.
- Add the beds together to get your total square feet.
- Divide by the coverage number for your depth in the table above, then round up.
Example: a bed 20 feet long and 15 feet wide is 300 square feet. At 3 inches deep, 300 divided by 108 is about 2.8 yards.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Front entry beds | 150 sq ft | 3 in | About 1.4 | About $140 |
| Foundation beds | 300 sq ft | 3 in | About 2.8 | About $280 |
| Large landscape bed | 500 sq ft | 3 in | About 4.6 | About $460 |
| Refresh of existing mulch | 600 sq ft | 2 in | About 3.7 | About $370 |
| Commercial frontage | 1,500 sq ft | 3 in | About 13.9 | About $1,390 |
Mulch or pine straw?
Bulk mulch is priced at $100 per yard and works well for most planting beds. Pine straw is $13 per bale and is a popular coastal Carolina choice for natural-looking beds, slopes and areas under pine trees. Send us your measurements and we will tell you how much of either you need.
Delivery only: we drop it off, you spread it
Want to do the spreading yourself? We can deliver just the materials. We bring mulch or pine straw to your property and drop it off where you want it, such as your driveway or next to your beds, and you take it from there.
| Option | What you get | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Delivered and installed | Material, delivery, bed prep and spreading | Mulch $100 per yard, pine straw $13 per bale |
| Delivery only | Material dropped off at your property | Call for a delivery price |
- Tell us what you need (mulch or pine straw) and how much.
- We confirm the price and where on your property to drop it.
- We deliver and drop off the materials. Spreading is up to you.

Which type of mulch is right for your yard?
The right product depends on your beds, your budget and the look you want. Ask which options we have available when you call. This table shows how the common types differ.
| Type | How it looks and behaves | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shredded hardwood | Dark brown, knits together as it settles | General beds and gentle slopes | Breaks down gradually and feeds the soil as it does |
| Pine bark | Chunky pieces in medium to dark brown | Shrub beds and tree rings | Larger pieces can float in heavy rain |
| Pine straw | Reddish-brown needles, light and airy | Slopes, areas under pines, a natural look | Settles and thins faster, so plan to top up more often |
| Dyed mulch (black, red or brown) | Uniform, bold color | Entrances and commercial frontage | Color fades over a season or two |
How a mulch installation works
Here is what to expect when you book a job with us.
- You call or message us with your address and rough bed sizes, and we measure to confirm.
- We agree on the product, the depth and the total price before delivery.
- We clear leaves and loose debris from the beds.
- We deliver the mulch and spread it to the agreed depth, keeping it back from trunks and siding.
- We clean up walkways and driveways when we finish.
When to mulch in Southport
Coastal North Carolina has a long growing season, so there is more than one good window.
| Time of year | Why it works | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Late winter to spring | Weeds are about to take off and summer heat is coming. Mulch holds moisture and blocks weed seeds. | Finish pruning and bed cleanup first, then mulch. |
| Early summer | A light top-up restores beds that thinned out over the spring. | Keep the total layer under 4 inches. |
| Fall | Mulch insulates roots before the cooler months and tidies beds after leaf drop. | A good time to refresh faded mulch. |
| Before a tropical storm | Hold off. Heavy rain and wind can wash or blow loose mulch out of beds. | Wait until the storm has passed. |
Mulch mistakes to avoid
- Piling mulch against trunks. Keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the trunk so the bark can stay dry. Deep mounds against a trunk hold moisture against the bark.
- Covering siding or foundation vents. Leave a gap between mulch and your house so you can see the foundation and keep moisture away from siding.
- Going too deep. More than 4 inches can keep water and air from reaching roots.
- Adding new mulch on top of thick old mulch. If last year’s layer is still about 2 inches deep, rake it loose and add a thin top layer instead of a full new one.
- Skipping a clean edge. A defined bed edge keeps mulch in the bed and grass out.

Frequently asked questions
Does the $100 per yard price include delivery and installation?
Yes. Our $100 per yard rate for bulk mulch and our $13 per bale pine straw rate both include delivery and installation.
Can you just deliver mulch without installing it?
Yes. We offer delivery only for mulch and pine straw. We drop the materials off at your property and you spread them yourself. Call (910) 946-5554 for a delivery price.
How many yards of mulch do I need?
Multiply bed length by width to get square feet, then divide by the coverage for your depth: 162 for 2 inches, 108 for 3 inches or 81 for 4 inches. Round up. The measuring section above has a worked example, or call us and we will measure for you.
How long does mulch last?
It depends on the type and the weather. Shredded hardwood and bark generally last a year or more before they need a top-up. Pine straw and dyed mulch tend to need refreshing sooner because they settle and fade.
Does mulch attract termites?
Mulch does not cause termites, but wood-based mulch piled against a foundation can make activity harder to spot. Keep a gap between mulch and your house, and keep up with regular termite inspections.
Do you mulch commercial properties?
Yes. We work on residential and commercial properties in Southport and nearby communities.
Can I combine mulch with a lawn plan or a cleanup?
Yes. Many jobs combine clearing old debris, trimming and mulching. See our monthly lawn care plans and our yard cleanup and junk removal page for details.
